Taken from Jeff Dwyer's question of the week. good info so I placed it here!

This is one of the most often asked questions at my book signings and lectures. I’ve addressed the issue before, but I’d like to review some of the underlying concepts.

Many people have complained to me that they failed to get any EVP/EAP at places I’ve described as intensely haunted. Also, I’ve heard from ghost hunters who are frustrated because some members of their team get more than 10 good EAP/EAP during a group investigation yet they come away with nothing.

Others have reported the opposite. I’ve suggested that a place may be haunted but little or no evidence of anything paranormal has turned up at the particular location for years, yet a few readers have contacted me with fantastic reports of multiple, clear EVP/EAP recorded at several sites within that location.  These folks seem to be gifted in that they get dramatic audio recordings when others have captured little or nothing.

Failure to get good EVP/EAP is frustrating but the variability of EVP/EAP capture among individuals is not surprising. Some ghost hunters are good at the technical process of audio investigation while others are not. Some are simply lucky while others are unlucky and cannot get to the right place at the right time.

There are others who have an uncanny knack for success. People tend to think of electronic audio phenomena as a sub-category of the TECHNICAL METHOD of ghost hunting and paranormal investigation. This categorization makes them believe that science or technology alone is the basis of detecting or discovering of paranormal activity that is audio in nature. Failure to understand that there is something more involved generates frustration when the results don’t match expectations.

It may be more correct to list EAP/EVP under PSYCHIC APPROACH because I believe there is a psychic element in the art of capturing paranormal audio phenomena. This psychic element may explain the wide variability in degree success in capturing audio phenomena.  People who get EAP/EVP easily, or frequently, at places where others get meager recordings, have been called EVP magnets.

You will notice that I am using the term EVP/EAP instead of the singular term, EVP. I explained my reasons in previous editions of Paranormal Question of the Week. Basically, the term Electronic Audio Phenomena, or EAP, is far more correct because it includes sounds that are not human vocalizations. These include slamming doors, footsteps, sobbing or crying, etc. It is incorrect to describe these sounds as “electronic voice phenomena,” or EVP.   The error committed in using the term EVP to describe an audio recording of a flute, for example, is similar to using the term “car trouble” to describe a problem with the outboard motor on your boat.

EAP Magnets are people who have some kind of ability to capture audio phenomena on digital or tape recorders. They are called “magnets” because their abilities give the impression that they attract EAP. A more appropriate term is EAP “Trigger” because I believe these people act as a trigger by causing the ghost to react vocally or by causing an environmental imprint to “play.”

As you know, there are two primary kinds of EAP. One is the true vocalization of a ghost that constitutes a reply or reaction to a specific question or request. By definition, this is a “specific” EAP. The second type of EAP is “non-specific” and typically comprises an environmental imprint of sound. This kind of EAP is paranormal but not ghostly.

Regardless of which kind of EAP you seek or capture, people who capture them easily or readily may possess a physical or psychic characteristic that triggers the environmental recording to play, or entices the ghost to communicate.

What is this characteristic?  Good question. If it could be identified, isolated, and enhanced through practice or training, the EAP might become the primary mode of paranormal investigation. A colleague suggested to me that one’s aura may influence elements within the environment that include audio imprints. At the very least, the emanation of some kind of psychic energy may the key process.

The process may be some kind of conscious or subconscious psychic projection that is ramped up while we perform EAP sweeps.  This is another reason why I suggest that ghost hunters precede each investigation with a meditation process that eliminates internal distractions and protects against the intrusion of external distractions. Meditation also helps us to focus our psychic or intuitive vision on the environment, the spirit we seek, or the specific time period associated with a haunting, such as the death event whether it was murder, accident, or progressive terminal illness.

How to determine if you are an EAP magnet or trigger:

Success in capturing EAP. If you get EAP readily, you may be a magnet or trigger.

People experience more paranormal activity when you are present. This may be audio, video, still photography, or even psychic impressions.

Other technical indicators of paranormal activity such as FLIR images and EMF spikes occur frequently when you are present and trying mentally or psychically to connect with a spirit.

The people who get a lot of EAP or EVP are sometimes called “magnets” suggesting that the phenomenon is somehow attracted to them. A better term might be “trigger” because I believe these lucky ghost hunters actually activate or trigger environmental imprints that play, like a recording, allowing the investigator to capture the audio phenomenon on a tape or digital recorder or the sound track of a video recorder.

So, if you don’t have much innate talent in gathering audio phenomena, the question becomes: can I increase my chances success, productivity, or frequency of experiences by some technique, training, or procedure?

There are two ways to answer this question. One pertains to the Technical Method of ghost hunting. Next week I will address the ways in which technical-based ghost hunters might increase their success in gathering EAP/EVP.

The other way to answer the question, which I will talk about tonight, pertains to the Psychic Method of ghost hunting. I believe that success in capturing EAP/EVP is due, in part, to affecting the environmental imprint, getting it to play. If you are dealing with a ghost (conscious of a dead person), you may need to entice the ghost to communicate through a similar process.

Environmental imprints can be triggered by emoting or emanating psychic energy. I know that sounds strange coming from a person with four university degrees in medical science, but I believe we do this quite often without being aware of it. For example, it is easy to tell when a friend or family member is in a bad mood even without looking at their face. They transmit angry vibes that a sensitive person can easily detect. You have to do something similar with environmental imprints and ghosts.

 The process involves focusing your psychic energy and increasing its power. Both are these are achieved best by first performing a brief meditation.  I always precede investigations by a brief meditation that is done so inconspicuously that people nearby don’t know what I am doing. The goal is;

  1. to clear the mind of internal distractions, stray thoughts, concerns, etc.

  2. to shield yourself against external distractions

  3. bring into focus the entity you seek or the time period pertinent to the ghostly activity or the environmental imprint

  4. achieve a sense of whole-body relaxation (yet remain alert), as if all parts of your body are in harmony or synchrony

People who are skilled at meditation can achieve these goals in less than 5 minutes while their companions run around a haunted site setting up cameras, etc.  Also, will to feel as though you are asleep or in a dream-state, in a cloud, or separate from the current moment. Anyone who looks at you will notice only that you are relaxed and that you don’t notice the activity of others around you.

Once you achieve a meditation state, you will feel as though your psychic energy level has increased. Focus that energy by creating a mental image of the ghost, its specific activity, a specific item such as a chair, bed, or weapon; or the time period pertinent to the ghost or the creation of the environmental imprint. If you can do this, you may feel mentally transported to another time, say the 1920s, as you focus on a ghost who may have been murdered by mobsters in Chicago. Once you are focused intently on that image, a pertinent object, and time period, evoke or trigger the environmental imprint by creating it in your mind.

For example, if the mobster you seek was shot by a “tommy gun” or automatic rifle, create the sound of rapid fire gun shots in your mind. You can also create moods such as fear or anger.

This process is one in which your psychic energy becomes focused ona particular sound, object, event, discreet period in time, or actions of a ghost that may be imprinted on the environment. The best success comes when you have thoroughly researched the haunted location.

Your research may reveal what sounds are most likely imprinted on the environment. The strongest imprints are created by intense, repetitive emotions. Some emotions can be very intense yet not repetitive. In your research look for information about explosions, gun shots, canon fire, breaking windows, lullabies' sung each night before an elderly lady passes away, etc. Meditate, then focus your mental energy on specific sounds or objects.

This method takes a lot of practice, but if you are frustrated with the lack of EAP/EVP in your investigations, it is worth a try.
